Background | IL-28A, also known as interferon λ 2, is a distant relative of IL-10 family and type I IFN family. IL-28A gene is located on chromosome 19 and each gene is composed of several exons. The exon tissue of these genes is also found in the IL-10 family, but unlike interferon I, it encodes only one exon. IL-28A exerts biological activity through viral infection or double strand RNA induced expression of. IL-28A cytokine overlapping type I interferon, including antiviral activity and MHC class I antigen expression. IL-28A protein emits signals through the same heterogeneous dimer receptor complex. These receptor complexes are composed of IL-10 receptor β and a novel IL-28 receptor α. Human IL-28A cDNA encodes a 200-amino acid (aa) precursor protein and a generally recognized 25-amino acid signal peptide. It shares 94% and 67% amino acid homology with human IL-28B and IL-29, respectively. Human/mouse IL-28A (IFN-lambda 2), IL-28B (IFN-lambda 3), and human IL-29 (IFN-lambda 1) are class II cytokine receptor ligands that are distantly related to members of the IL-10 family (11 - 13% amino acid (aa) sequence identity) and type I IFN family (15 - 19% aa sequence identity). These cytokines exert bioactivities that overlap those of type I IFNs, including antiviral activity and up-regulation of MHC class I antigen expression. |
