Background | Ferritin consists of a mineral core of hydrated ferric oxide, and a multi-subunit protein shell which englobes the former and assures its solubility in an aqueous environment. It is mainly localized intracellularly in cells of the reticuloendothelial system as well as in liver, spleen and bone marrow. Elevated serum levels are found in patients with iron overload and in other diseases such as pernicious anaemia, chronic inflammations such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA), hepatocellular carcinoma and Hodgkin’s disease. Ferritin consists of two components, the apoferritin and the iron core (FeIII - hydroxyphosphate-micelle). The apoferritin is a globular protein built up of 24 subunits that can bind up to 4500 iron atoms. Other non-ferrous metal ions such as Al or Be can also bind to ferritin, which acts partly as a metal ion detoxicant. |
