| Background | Bcl-2 protein family members function either to promote or inhibit programmed cell death. Some of these proteins, such as Bax and Bak, function to promote apoptosis, whereas others like Bcl-2 and Bcl-XL inhibit apoptosis. Bcl-2, typically an inhibitor of apoptosis, has also been demonstrated to have pro-apoptotic activity. The Bcl-2 protein is a suppressor of apoptosis that homodimerizes with itself and forms heterodimers with Bax. Expression of Bcl-2α oncoprotein inhibits the programmed cell death (apoptosis). In most follicular lymphomas, neoplastic germinal centers express high levels of Bcl-2α protein, whereas the normal or hyperplastic germinal centers are negative. |
